FAQ:

What is Shiosai Project?

The Shiosai Project is an effort to identify Japan's highest-quality homes and gardens.

Why that name?

For ten years the project's founder, Douglas M. Roth, livied near a delightful, high-quality Japanese garden in Hayama called Shiosai-Park (pronounced She-oh-sigh). That garden has rarely, if ever, been mentioned in Japanese garden literature, despite the fact it was the Taisho Emperor's home for the last ten years of his life. When garden as nice as Shiosai Koen gets such scant attention, it proves that many of Japan's very best gardens are going unnoticed.

When was the Shiosai Project established?

The first rankings came out in 2003. They have been updated each year since.

Who coordinates the Shiosai Project Research?

The Shiosai Project is coordinated by the staff at Sukiya Living Magazine (JOJG, The Journal of Japanese Gardening).

Why is this project considered groundbreaking?

JOJG is the only source to have ever complied this kind of quality-based rankings of Sukiya Living Environments. Previous listings by Japanese experts were not ranked, and they were oriented toward large or famous gardens. JOJG's Shiosai Rankings are, in fact, historically-significant and have already received nationwide (in Japan) television and newspaper coverage.

Why does JOJG place so much emphasis on that one word, “quality"?

Too much attention has been paid to certain gardens simply because they are large, old, or historical in nature. The Shiosai Project is an effort to bypass those destinations and to focus instead on gardens that actually succeed at being beautiful, functional, and satisfying. The terms “high-quality garden” and “high-quality living environment” help everyone understand this goal.

What do you actually mean by “high quality?

The term has different meanings to each individual. We encourage participating experts to make choices based on their own definition of the term.

What gardens are eligible for consideration?

Any house or garden that is accessible to the public is eligible. JOJG is particularly interested in identifying high-quality gardens that are located at restaurants, hotels, ryokan, onsen, and museums.

Why not just stick to so-called “public” gardens?

Japanese gardens attached to facilities such as restaurants and ryokan have many things in common with the much overlooked residential garden. Restaurants and ryokan are designed around human activity and offer visitors the chance to enjoy a residential experience without actually living in Japan.

Does the Shiosai Project list private gardens that are not open to the public?

No - if a visitor can’t gain year-round access to the garden, it isn’t listed. JOJG readers should be aware that some listed gardens might be difficult, but possible, to see. For example, visiting an exclusive ryokan or restaurant might be expensive and require special reservations, but you can go there if you really want to.

What if they think a “large” or “historically-significant” garden is actually a high-quality one?

That’s fine. The experts are free to rank the gardens however they feel appropriate. There are certainly some gardens that are both famous and of high quality.

How can someone compare a small restaurant or ryokan garden with a huge park-like space?

They do the best they can. Everyone has to remember that quality, and not quantity, is what matters.

What if the experts miss certain key gardens or even entire regions?

JOJG’s database includes rankings for 1000+ gardens in every prefecture in Japan. Newly-discovered “gems” are added to the database each year.

I haven’t heard of some of the gardens on the Shio-sai Project “Top-50” rankings.

That’s the idea. We’re more than happy to identify gardens that aren’t on the well-worn tourist map.

How will the Shiosai Project change things in the Japanese gardening world?

Some old and famous gardens are of embarassingly low quality. Those gardens have always had a destructive influence, especially on Western academics and tourists who might not know the difference. The Shiosai Project has already started to change that paradigm. Serious garden enthusiasts can now focus more of their energy on truly excellent gardens.

Who is participating in this project?

JOJG has solicited feedback from more than 30 experts who regulary contribute articles to JOJG. Some of them are Japanese, some are foreigners.

How are gardens compared statistically?

Each expert makes a long list of gardens they have visited and then ranks the gardens on that list. Based on those rankings, each gardens receives a score of between 0 and 100. Many gardens are ranked by more than one expert, and the scores are avaraged. The final Shiosai Rankings are complied from the avarage score.

How many gardens did each expert evaluate?

Most experts visited and ranked from 100 to 200 different gardens.
