The United Kingdom and Ireland play host to about 50 public Japanese gardens. In an effort to identify the most noteworthy, JOJG distributed a survey to experts there. The survey posed one question: “What are the highest-quality Japanese gardens in the UK and Ireland?” We encouraged participants to apply their own definition of the word “quality. As in 2003, most experts agreed that Tatton Park is their finest garden. Originally built in 1910, it received a renovation in 2001. Its memorable features include a teahouse and handsome bamboo enclosure fence. Tatton Park is located near Manchester, about 210km NW of London. The best time to visit are on Wed. and Sat., when special guided tours of the Japanese garden are offered.
英国及びアイルランドの約50の公開日本庭園から選んだ現地の専門家による順位を紹介。第一位は2001年に改修を受けリニューアルオープンしたタットン・パークの日本庭園。上位８位の中に「本格的な（正式の）」日本の茶室と称して艶あり赤ペンキが全体に塗られた建物が登場するなど、まず日本における伝統庭園の佇まいを知ってもらうことが必要なのではないかと痛感させられた英国での調査結果でした。
